A figure long besought
To loose us from the snare in which
We were hopelessly caught.
Though his light dawned without pretense
Or grandeur or acclaim,
It signaled the irruption of
An everlasting reign.
Messiah’s radiant beam splintered
The night, and crescendoed
Into an all-consuming blaze
Which ravaged the Shadow.
But as the sun hastens towards
Its spatial apogee,
I fear that its advent was missed
Entirely by me,
And that I persist in darkness,
Unable to perceive
And clutch with abandon him who
Will set prisoners free.
And so I plead with you, O Christ:
Dawn in my heart today;
Enable by tender mercy
True faith without delay.
