My wife and I travel every Thanksgiving to visit our families and this past Thanksgiving was no exception. We set out on the ten hour trip to my parents’ home the day before thousands of turkeys reached the consummation of their fate. Focus on the Family Radio Theater’s production of Oliver Twist was there to accompany us along our journey. I read Dickens’ novel years ago and more recently watched the BBC’s TV rendition from decades past.
The rendition of Oliver Twist under review here did justice to the heart of Dickens’ classic novel. Indeed, it brought to life this story of misfortune, oppression, and eventual redemption. It presents the story in a way that draws you into it as if you were there along with Oliver throughout his journey. Not only do you feel present in the story, but you begin to identify with the plight of the thousands of orphaned or neglected children for whom Oliver stands as a representative. These effects are no doubt the result of the superb acting and the splendid original musical arrangements. This is not to down play the timeless quality of Dickens’ writing which is the soul of this story, but rather to highlight the value of this production for making this classic more accessible to our fast paced culture. This production of Oliver Twist will be a cherished traveling partner for us in the future and I trust will be one for you too.
On a negative note, when I opened my copy I was shocked to find the third disc missing. I hope that this is only true in my case, however, I would not let it deter you from acquiring this treasure.
