This weekend was a busy one for Wes and I (we wish Jon could've made it). We both had the opportunity to present papers at the eastern regional meeting of the Evangelical Theological Society (ETS). Wes had the choice opportunity in his paper to critique aspects of Dr. Michael Gorman's non-violent reading in his book Reading Revelation Responsibly. He did a bang-up job while under the added pressure of having Dr. Gorman in attendance! It was a true display of civil and academic discourse between a young scholar cutting his teeth and a seasoned scholar humbly and graciously being the object of said teeth cutting. In my paper, I offered a proposal that Genesis 1:1-2:3 functions in relation to the Eden narrative beginning in 2:4 as a theological blueprint for the construction of creation, God's abode. It engendered a lively conversation among some of those in attendance and myself and overall it went as well as could be expected. Check out the pictures below . . .
The meeting's main theme was on evangelicals, ecumenism, and inter-faith dialogue. Although I don't have the time to offer any detailed thoughts, I will say that it was a truly enriching time.
And as a side-note, the campus of St. Mary's Seminary and University, where the meeting was held, was amazing. What a great aesthetic atmosphere in which to study, dialogue, and debate. In short, one's intellectual abilities are increased by the mere walking of its halls. Unfortunately, I took no photos of the school, but I've added a photo below taken by Jon Watson.
